Bacchante

Materials: ivory, goldfilled brass
Date: 1840-1860
Origin of the cameo: France
Size: 2 1/2 x 2
Condition: two beads of the necklace are broken off, otherwise the cameo is mint.

This Museum Quality ivory cameo is carved very three-dimensionally, like a sculpture. The head is protruding out of the background.
All the details of the elaborate hair, decorated with flowers and foils, are masterly rendered by a true artist.
But the most amazing peculiarity of this cameo is the magnificent face. Its artistic quality is superb and the beautiful woman, though idealized, is extremely realistic: please look at its sweet looking and its delicate smile.
This cameo seems to be the twin of the cameo A013 (I have added here its picture).
The frame is not original, as we can notice looking at the two small holes on the backside. We can understand that the cameo was originally framed with a very simple bezel, still present on the cameo A013.
I'm near sure that both the cameos were carved by the same artist, as they seems to portray the same woman, the position of the head is the same, and both wear a two strads necklace (almost unusual on cameos).
