This magnificent high-relief cameo depicts the Neoclassical allegory of the Warrior and His Bride. It is very similar to a shell cameo I had sold two years ago (cameo # s046), so you can read a fine description of this subject, written by Corrie Tapp.
I'm actually puzzled because the frame: I think is very possible the cameo was posted on an existing frame, as the vertical position of the pin, the position of the date and dedication engraved on the back side: "In Memory of J. xxxxxxx" 4th Mar: 1858" (the name was intentionally erased), and the pendant bale, indicates the frame was originally for an horizontal cameo.
But, on the other hand, I'm totally sure the cameo was not reduced for to be adapted to the frame... that is strange, as is near impossible (for my experience) to find a cameo of the right size for an existing frame.
In any case, we can easy wear the cameo, as vertical pins are not so unusual on large brooches.
The frame is simple and very appropriate to a such elaborate cameo, and almost heavy: at least 15-20 grams of gold.
