Lava stone is a very fascinating material. Though it cannot be considered a semi-recious stone, lava cameos are very appreciated. Its smooth shape give the illusion to look at true miniaturized marble sculptures. Lava is quite soft, and in somehow easy to carve. But its softness give problems to carvers, because is easy to damage it during the work. Because its friability, most antique cameos carved from this stone are today lost, or broken or damaged. The above Medusa is probably the most beautiful piece I have ever seen.
