The ancient highest quality cameos, carved by the best workshop's masters were very expensive at that time and produced for selected customers only.
Similar cameos are now extremely rare and are often defined as of "Museum Quality".

Some of the ancient highest quality cameos had been carved not by ordinary, though excellent artisans, but surely by true artists (medallists, sculptors etc.), as we can see from the highest quality of the subject expression and their uniqueness.
Unfortunately most of the cameos (and in particular the ones not made of hard stone) are not signed so is very difficult to identify their makers.
