MUSEUM QUALITY SHELL CAMEO OF THE GODDESS FLORA
Unset shell high-relief cameo depicting the bust and left-facing profile of the goddess Flora in the late Neoclassical style.
The face is remarkable for the nobility of the features, with fine, large eyes, a classically straight nose, a firm chin and a determined mouth. In spite of the slight sternness of her features, she wears a pleasant, almost merry, expression as befits the goddess of springtime.
A necklace of graduated pearls adorns the neck. The hair, rendered in fine detail, is in a loose Faustina coif with cascading ringlets. A wreath of flowers, the traditional symbol of the goddess Flora, crowns the head and there are more flowers on the chignon and at the breast. The flowers, particularly the roses and rose leaves, are exquisitely wrought. The neckline of the garment suggests the Directoire style.
In spite of the profusion of blooms, the design of this cameo is restrained and balanced. The execution is masterly, the carving assured yet delicate. This is an exceptional piece which is sure to spark the interest of serious cameo collectors.
