s032g.JPG Cardinal Richelieu Cameo

Size: 2 by 1 - 1/2 inches
Material: Shell, Unframed
Origin: France
Date: ca 1850

Condition: Mint. The cameo is like new, never framed and seldom handled. There is no wearing to the high points of the carving as usually noted in a cameo of this age and no chipping or surface flaws.

This excellent cameo is a portrait of Armand Jean du Plessis, Cardinal Richelieu (1585 - 1642), the French cleric and statesman who became the most powerful man in Europe. This eminence grise at the court of Louis XIII is familiar to everyone who loves Dumas's novels about the Three Musketeers.

The cameo shows Richelieu in right-facing profile. His face, handsome, shrewd and intelligent, is full of resolve and perspicacity. His chin is firm, his mouth curved in a half-smile that reveals his courtier's suavity but belies his ruthlessness. The large, fine eyes wear a guarded expression. He sports a silky, narrow chin whisker and a flowing moustache. His abundant wavy hair is combed back off the forehead, his ear partly hidden by the hair.. The Cardinal is clad in a coat over a finely-pleated shirt with a small wing collar. A medallion on a chain hangs on his breast.

This is a superb large cameo of finely-detailed workmanship and vibrant artistry. Its condition is immaculate. This is a highly collectible piece that merits a place in any collection of historical portrait cameos. It would also make a fine present either to a scholar of French history or to a Roman Catholic cleric. It has a retail value of $1,300.
