Bacchante
Materials: Shell cameo, 18k gold frame
Cameo Only: 1 9/16 x 1 1/8
Including Bezel: 1 7/8 x 1 7/16
Origin and Date: France, first half 19th Century.
There are two hallmarks on the pin, but I was unable to indentify.
The original C clasp was replaced by a tube clasp.
Condition: Mint. There are no surface flaws, cracks or chips and there is no wearing to the high points of the carving. It has been lightly handled and seldom worn.
Rare cameo because depict a typical classical subject (a Bacchante), but the carving reflects the 19th Century Romantic Style. The cameo could be looks lightly used up, on the picture. But is actually mint: the carvering is smooth and not crisp to exalt the Romantic character.
The frame is superb: it is delicately pierced and is in perfect condition. Elaborate but discrete.
This is a magnificent piece of jewellery, very desirable and collectable. |
