This cameo of surpassing beauty probably depicts Elisabeth de Valois (Fontainebleau, 1545 - Madrid, 1568) daughter of Henry II and Caterina de' Medici. Fiancée to Don Carlos, but bounded to marry his father, Philippe II.
The unlucky Elisabeth inspired many writers, at first Henry Shiller. From his novel Giuseppe Verdi composed the Don Carlos.
This portrait shows the most detailled clothes I have never seen on a cameo: the face is incomparable and the bezel was masterly inspired to the late 16th Century jewellery.
This is ane extremely rare cameo because its beauty, its condition and its frame, original in all parts. |
