This fabulous cameo depicts Polhymnia, Muse of the epic Poetry, holding the plectrum, and contemplating the tomb of the hero whom she celebrates.
Is difficult to understand if the cameo is agate or shell, because the unusual background on the back side. The cameo is totally white (both figure and background), so it was layed on a counter-cameo (probably a slate stone) to obtain a blue/gray effect on the cameo's background, thanks to its transparence. Both cameo and stone are framed by origin.
The frame is in fabulous condition considering the age, original in all parts. Over 95% of the enamel is still present. The frame is like cloisonne'.
This is a very rare, desirable and collectable piece of antique jewelery.
