This cameo of surpassing beauty shows an excellent and still crisp carving, and checked with a 10X lens appears as new and 100% intact. The light white striping you can see on the background of the cameo (actually, they are near invisible) are not dues to the dehydration and to the age, but are by origin of the shell.
The frame has two hallmarks on the pin, as on the C clasp: an eagle head (first type, used in Paris between 1838/1847), and an unidentified hallmark, probably the signature of the goldsmith. The frame is intricately chiselled and enamelled (in black). I have done my best for to obtain a good picture but, though I have an excellent camera with macro lens, the work is too much detailed for to show all particulars.<br>
As the cameo, the frame is mint, in as new condition and original in all parts. Around 2 mm of one channel of the carving has lost the enamel. In anyway I think this is happened by origin, a light defect of the work (near invisible to the naked eye) because the very slim channels.
I think this cameo was never, or near never worn, because even the hallmarks are extremely crisp, as new.
This is a cameo of prestige, surely made to order for an important purchaser, extremely rare and hard to find. |
