Mucius Scaevola Shell, gold Size of the cameo: 2 7/16 x 1 15/16 Size of the brooch: 3 x 2 1/2 Date and origin: Italy, ca 1840-50 Condition: excellent (very light and unnoticeable wear on the faces)   Excellent and very rare cameo, carved to depict a scene with the roman soldier Mucius Scaevola thrusting his hand into a brazier fire while the king and two other members of the court look on, within a gold mount with four scrolled sections, each with engraved foliate patterns.
